My Perspective as an Artist on My Sketch “Skull Within a Butterfly”

A Pencil Sketch of a Skull Enclosed in a Butterfly

Most of you must be wondering, what is this image?!

A skull within a butterfly?! Well! Well! Dig in to find out that what exactly is the message behind this beauty.

Skull – A bony structure, which has the tendency to enable faintness in any human, especially females, if it is found lying around casually.

Butterfly – A colorful living being that spreads happiness as it flies from one flower to another.

Can a skull and a butterfly be together? What will be your reaction if you find a butterfly sitting on a skull? Most of you will consider it a sign of dark magic! But, some of you will focus on the beauty of the butterfly; whereas, a few of you will get scared by the hideousness of the skull.

I, on the other hand, will be fascinated by the beauty of both, the butterfly and the skull. I believe “Everything has a special kind of beauty which is within the eye of the beholder.”

But, what if you see a butterfly with an imprint of a skull just like the one shown in the image sketched by me? For a second, just focus on the beauty of it.

When I sketched it, two things were going through my head. First, most of the times a person labelled as ugly by the society is actually beautiful.

Now, half of my readers would be thinking, how could a human being be ugly? while the other half would be wondering, why am I referring an ugly thing as beautiful?

Well, nothing is ugly, everyone and everything has a special kind of beauty. It just depends upon the viewer’s perspective. The internal beauty of a person is all that matters.

Second, sometimes a person that looks perfect from the exterior can be hollow inside. By hollow, I mean broken or in need of love and attention. A lot of times we notice people’s behaviors changing, but instead of understanding their inner feelings we either ignore them or criticize them.

In such circumstances, it is better to understand the other person’s feelings and try to help them. Sometimes, a few minutes of our time can save a person’s day or even their life.

In the end, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes related to art by Thomas Merton:
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
